If you want to see Malé as locals do — start at the fish market before the sun softens. The pace, the colour, the sheer abundance of the catch is something you'll remember long after you've left the city.
The market is busiest in the late afternoon, when the boats return and the day's catch is laid out for trade.
Inside, it's all tuna: skipjack and yellowfin laid out on long tiled counters, cut to order with practised speed. Watch for a while and you'll see the whole chain — boat to counter to someone's dinner — happen in front of you.
Good to know: the floor is wet, so leave the nice sandals at home. Ask before taking close-up photos of the cutters.
